Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people ask us before their first pouch. If your question is not here, get in touch and we will answer it ourselves.

Caffeine, and how it feels

Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes. Matcha is made from whole green tea leaf that has been stone-milled into powder, so every serve contains naturally occurring caffeine. Anyone telling you matcha is caffeine-free is wrong.

What makes matcha different is not the absence of caffeine but the company it keeps. Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves, and the two are consumed together. A serve of matcha generally contains less caffeine than a standard cup of brewed coffee. The exact caffeine content per serve is listed on your pouch.

What is the difference between doze. and coffee?

Three real differences.

First, L-theanine. Coffee gives you caffeine on its own. Matcha gives you caffeine alongside L-theanine, and it releases more gradually, which is why people commonly describe matcha energy as steadier and smoother rather than a sharp peak followed by a flat patch.

Second, what else is in the cup. A coffee is a coffee. Every serve of doze. also carries 800mg of Lion's Mane fruiting body extract, 400mg of marine collagen and blue spirulina.

Third, acidity. Coffee is considerably more acidic than matcha, which is why some people find matcha gentler first thing in the morning.

Will doze. make me jittery?

Everyone tolerates caffeine differently, so we cannot make promises about how any individual will respond. What we can say is that the reason most of our customers switched from coffee is that they did not like how coffee made them feel, and matcha is generally described as a smoother experience. If you are particularly caffeine-sensitive, start with a half scoop.

Is matcha safe during pregnancy?

We are not able to give individual medical advice, and pregnancy is exactly the situation where you should get it from someone who knows your history.

What we can tell you is the relevant facts. Matcha contains caffeine, and health authorities generally advise limiting caffeine intake to around 200mg per day during pregnancy. doze. also contains Lion's Mane, marine collagen, blue spirulina and stevia extract. Please speak to your GP, midwife or obstetrician before adding doze. or any other supplement to your routine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What is actually in it

What are the full ingredients in doze.?

Seven ingredients, in the order they appear on the pouch: Ceremonial Matcha (Camellia sinensis), Lion's Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), Fish Collagen, MCT Powder (Coconut), Coconut Powder, Stevia Extract, Blue Spirulina.

The first four are the functional actives. The MCT powder and coconut powder are what give it a creamy body without dairy, and the stevia extract is what balances matcha's natural bitterness. We break all seven down on our what is actually in doze. page.

Contains fish and tree nuts (coconut).

How much Lion's Mane and collagen is actually in each scoop?

Every serve contains 800mg of Lion's Mane fruiting body extract and 400mg of marine collagen, plus shade-grown ceremonial matcha and blue spirulina.

Those numbers are on the front of the pouch because they are actually in the pouch. There is no proprietary blend hiding a token sprinkle of the expensive ingredient behind a total blend weight. You can read the full breakdown of every ingredient on our what is actually in doze. page.

What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium Lion's Mane?

The fruiting body is the actual mushroom, the part you would recognise growing on a tree. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from.

Mycelium is much cheaper to produce because it is typically grown on a bed of sterilised grain, usually rice, then harvested and milled together with that grain. The resulting powder can be substantially starch from the growing medium rather than mushroom, and it can still legally be labelled Lion's Mane.

doze. uses 800mg of 100% fruiting body extract per serve, at a 10:1 extraction ratio, meaning ten kilograms of mushroom go into every kilogram of extract. Country of origin is China.

What does doze. taste like?

Smooth and creamy, not bitter. The harsh, grassy taste people associate with matcha usually comes from lower culinary grade powder, so we use ceremonial grade, made from the youngest top leaves.

The creaminess comes from MCT powder and coconut powder, which give it body without dairy, so it works with hot water as well as it does with milk. A small amount of stevia extract balances the bitterness. The Lion's Mane and marine collagen are close to flavour-neutral, and blue spirulina adds colour rather than taste.

Is doze. sweetened? Does it contain sugar?

doze. is lightly sweetened with stevia extract, taken from the leaf of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. There is no cane sugar and no artificial sweetener in the blend.

This is deliberate. Unsweetened ceremonial matcha is an acquired taste, and a daily ritual only works if you actually want to drink it. If you prefer it less sweet, use a slightly smaller scoop and more milk.

Are there allergens? Is doze. vegan?

The pouch declares fish and tree nuts (coconut). The fish comes from the marine collagen, and the coconut from the MCT powder and coconut powder.

doze. is not vegan, because of the fish collagen. It also contains naturally occurring caffeine from matcha. It is not suitable if you are allergic to fish or coconut. Always check the pouch for the current ingredient and allergen statement, as formulations can change.

How to use it

How do I make doze.?

One scoop, about thirty seconds. Add one scoop to a cup, add a small amount of hot (not boiling) water and whisk or shake until smooth, then top with your milk of choice, hot or over ice. Boiling water can scorch matcha and make it taste bitter, so let the kettle sit for a minute first.

Because of the MCT and coconut powder it also works well made with just water, if you are at a desk rather than a kitchen. If you want it to taste like something other than a plain latte, our signature matcha recipes cover four variations.

When should I drink it?

Most people drink doze. in the morning, either in place of a first coffee or as a mid-morning follow-up. Because it contains caffeine, we would suggest treating it the way you would treat any caffeinated drink and being sensible about how late in the day you have it.

How long until I notice anything?

We are not going to promise you a result on a timeline. doze. is a nutritional supplement, not a medicine, and individual experiences vary. The caffeine and L-theanine in matcha are something people generally notice in the cup itself. Ingredients like Lion's Mane and marine collagen are taken as a daily habit rather than a one-off, so consistency matters more than any single serve.

How many serves are in a pouch?

Around 30 serves per pouch, which works out at roughly $1.17 a serve, less than most takeaway coffees. Two and three pouch bundles bring the per-serve cost down further.

I decided to try the strawberry version of matcha, so mashed some fresh strawberries and added them to my matcha. It was sooo yummy! And the customer service was excellent!

Best matcha I have tasted, also love the contents: matcha, collagen and lion's mane. I have been looking for a matcha that is not bitter. I have found it.
